Paul L. Archibald Memorial Fund
Established in April 2011, this fund was created in loving memory of Paul Lewis Archibald, who passed away due to cancer. He was a young 60 years old and exemplified a youthful and caring spirit, which is the very essence of this fund.
Fund Description
Awards from the Paul L. Archibald Memorial Fund will be given annually to teenagers who exude a passion and determination to achieve a goal.
While operating Chapman Cottage with his wife, Donna, Paul honed his mentoring skills, as he employed local teenagers to work in various parts of the restaurant’s kitchen. Paul’s passion was not just cooking, but caring for his family, and anyone who simply needed a helping hand. Most of 'Paul's kids' needed just that...a helping hand, a confident, and sometimes, just someone to believe in them. He went on to mentor numerous 'kids' from high school throughout early adult-life, and has had profound impacts on the lives of the those that he challenged, encouraged, and mentored. One thing our family has learned since the passing of Paul, is that he was a mentor to more than those he sought to mentor; he mentored, inspired, listened, and cared for most that entered his life.
As a family, we felt that these 'kids' would be losing an ally, with the passing of Paul. So, in his honor, and as a testament to the person he was and what he meant to those around him, we have started this memorial fund to give small financial scholarships to young adults...'Paul's kids'. These 'kids' harbor a passion for something, whether it be a path through college, trade school, or simply following a dream, they show a desire to pursue their vision, and simply need a little help.
This memorial fund will contribute an annual financial award to one or more teenagers in pursuit of a passion, but even more than the money can offer, this fund offers hope and a helping hand. Below are some thoughts from people whom Paul had a positive impact upon, and we invite you to read them and help keep Paul's spirit alive.
"While I don’t think Paul ever knew it, he will always be a measuring stick in my life. Not many people would take a stranger into their home, and help them when they needed a hand; Paul not only did me that favor but also treated me as one of his own. He made me lunches, dinners and shared many cigars talking on the porch. When I realized I could do nothing to repay his generosity I often see opportunities to help others and think to myself what would Paul have done!"
"I learned so much from Paul in the few years I knew him. He gave me the best advice I have ever received in my life, and helped me through a very difficult time. I was so proud when he let me cook in his restaurant. Everything I know about cooking (hot Pan, cold oil) and baking (carrot cake should taste like Carrots) I learned from Paul. Every time I bake rolls, make pumpkin whoopee pies, admire a bold Zinfandel or eat an ice cream sundae on April Fool’s morning he will be there with me."
"Paul was one of the greatest and most noble men I have ever had grace my presence. I have grown up never meeting either of my grandfathers and have always held Paul in that place, as a mentor and figure that I had taken wisdom and respect from. He had a way with words and charisma that would make me smile in his presence. I will never forget your father and the impact he has had on myself, if it were not for him, I would not be the man I am today."
