Dr. Mohamed Nabil RashadThe Dr. Mohamed Nabil Rashad Memorial Fund, established in 2010, is a tribute the memory of a great man: Doctor, Author, Researcher, and Professor.

Dr. Rashad dedicated his life to the education of Anesthesiologists throughout the world, holding teaching posts at the Cairo University, the University of Hawaii, the Baylor College of Medicine, and the University of Southern California.

Distributions are awarded annually to an Egyptian medical student in support of his/her efforts to pursue a medical degree or medical training in the United States. Recipients must demonstrate the highest levels of academic achievement and a deep commitment to helping and healing patients.

Mohamed Nabil Rashad, MD, PhD, MPH, passed away at the age of 74 on March 17, 2010 in Los Angeles, CA. He was born in Cairo, Egypt on July 12, 1935 to a family of limited means. He worked hard to graduate from Shobrah High School with Academic Honors and in 1952 was accepted into Medical School at Cairo University with a full scholarship. He graduated from Medical School with Academic Honors in 1958, and then moved to Belfast, Ireland to pursue a PhD in Genetics at Queens University, which he completed in 1967.  He returned to Egypt as a Professor of Medicine at Alexandria University from 1968-1969.  In 1970, Dr. Rashad was offered a teach position at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu as a Professor of Genetics. He lived in Honolulu from 1970-1981, and in addition to teaching at the University of Hawaii and having a private practice in Family Medicine, Dr. Rashad pursued further medical training including completing a Master’s Degree in Public Health in 1971, a Residency in General Preventive Medicine in 1973, a Fellowship in Oncology in 1977, and a Residency in Internal Medicine in 1977.  Realizing that Anesthesiology was his true calling, he moved to Boston to become an Anesthesiology Resident at Harvard Medical School from 1981-1984. Further specialization brought him to Houston, TX to complete a Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. In 1985, he was offered a teaching post at Baylor College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology. He remained in Houston teaching and practicing at the VA Medical Center until 1992, when he moved to Los Angeles, CA to become a Professor of Clinical Anesthesia at the University of Southern Californica Medical School. In Los Angeles, he continued to practice Anesthesiology at the VA Medical Center and teach at the USC Medical School until his retirement in 1999. He was the founder of Cyber University in 1984, a Board Review Course for Anesthesiologists. He continued to teach Board Review Courses even after his retirement, holding classes all over the US, in Europe, in Egypt and on international cruise ships. Dr. Rashad's 96 publications included articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Lancet, Science, Anesthesia and Analgesia, and the American Journal of Physiology, and he has Authored and Co-Authored 5 textbooks including A Short Manual of Human Anatomy, and Anesthesia Review: Basic Science.
