The Life of Debra
Debra Jones Stevenson was born September 26, 1953 in Florence, South Carolina where she graduated from South Florence High School and went on to get a Associates Degree in business from Florence Technical Institute. On November 4, 1978 she married Darrell L. Stevenson and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Debra was a loving, faithful and Godly mother to four children. After the birth of her second child in 1988, her life was forever changed. Debra gave up her career and took care of my sister Erika Nicole who was born with Spina Bifida and was hydrocephalic. With 24 hour a day nursing care, mom quickly and eagerly learned to care for her every need.
My mother never questioned God’s purpose for blessing them with a special needs child. Sacrificing their dream home we moved to some family land in Hiddenite, North Carolina to be able to afford and better care for Erika. My mother (Debra) never left her side sometimes staying at the hospital 30 days at a time. Debra never gave up on Erika and gave her all to try to give her the best quality of life while she was with us on the earth. Mom called her our family angel and that she truly was! Erika wasn’t expected to live 2yrs tops, but live 4 years and 6 months exact to everyone’s amazement.
After Erika went on to be our true family angel, mom decided to go back to work but to go into the medical field to help others as she had been helped. My mother never thought you were too old to learn, she went back to school to obtain her nursing assistant degree and about five years later began substitute teaching for the exceptional classes at Taylorsville Elementary and riding the handicap bus to assist with children on the bus. After a few years mom decided helping the children was where God called her to be, so she pursued her teacher assistant degree so she could work with the special needs children on a fulltime basis. Mom opened her heart to the children she worked with and loved them and their families with all her heart. After twelve years of working in the school system, mom decided to go back and pursue her bachelors in teaching and only had one semester to finish before she would graduate.
Our mother was a woman of strong faith and had been a picture of health until the last 6 months as her health quickly declined and we learned she had pancreatic and liver cancer that spread to her lungs within 3 weeks of her diagnosis and only was with us 5 short weeks once she was diagnosed. Through all her sickness mom pressed on to be the one to help others, she was always staying after school to help with ballgames or any sports activity even if my youngest brother Zach wasn’t playing. Just 2 weeks before she passed she didn’t feel well but sat through three basketball games in one evening back to back because she wanted to be there for her grandchildren. She was courageous in her battle and kept telling her family that it would all be okay, we just needed to love each other and be there for each other. Before our mother passed she told our pastor she was at peace with everything and I truly believe she was. One thing many people knew about our mother was that she was a true child of God.
My family hopes to be able to reach out and help others like our mother always did by establishing this memorial fund. We hope that many will be blessed in years to come by being able to achieve our mother’s dream of a higher education.
