About Don Hagan
Raymond Donald (Don) Hagan was born March 14, 1943 in Los Angeles, CA to Muriel Ann (Guth) Hagan and Raymond Thomas Hagan.
Don was raised in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, CA. He attended local valley schools. He was named Outstanding Boy of the Year at Sutter Junior High and named to the Los Angeles High School All City Football Team. In football, he was a center and line backer, but he also excelled in baseball as a catcher. He went to college on a football scholarship and graduated from California State University, Northridge. He received a master’s degree from UC Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. in exercise physiology and kinesiology from the University of Oregon, Eugene. He returned to Santa Barbara for his postdoctoral work.
In 1977, Don moved to Texas to work as Director of the Exercise Physiology Division with the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas. It is at the Cooper Institute where he met his wife, Maggie, while she was participating in a study. They married in 1981, and the first two of their four children were born in Dallas. While in Dallas, Don also served as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Associate Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and Director of Research at the Institute for Human Fitness. In 1991, Don’s career took the family to San Diego for his work as Senior Scientist at the Geo-Centers in the Naval Health Research Center, and it is there where their two youngest children were born. The family enjoyed California, living near their extended families. Don moved to Houston in 2001 to take a position with NASA as the Exercise Lead in the Human Adaptation and Countermeasures Office and the family followed after.
Don was a man of many and varied interests. First and foremost he was a scientist. He published more than 60 research papers and was well known in his profession. He loved music and played guitar; was active in sports, coaching many of his children’s teams. He was well known in both the San Diego area and in Friendswood, TX for his involvement with youth sports and his devotion to his family.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Ray, who died when he was 12 years old. Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Riley-Hagan, daughter, Shauna Evonne Hagan (20), Ryan Matthew Hagan (17), Colin Daniel Hagan (12), and Aaron Raymond Hagan (10).
