Carol Gray

Loving, Compassionate, Unselfish, and Beautiful

Carol was our Mom and a friend to everyone:

As a wife, mother, mother in law, grandmother and friend, Mom (Carol) provided us with the GIFT of opportunity, love and tremendous support throughout our lives.  She was a registered nurse and she spent her entire working career in healthcare helping others.  There was NO better person for that position.  She, with her kind, caring, unselfish personality, always focused squarely on making others feel comfortable.   She was always calming those who were upset and she found the absolute best quality in every person she came in contact with.  No matter how badly you felt, simply having Mom in the room made you feel better.

Mom continued her nursing ways even while she was receiving chemotherapy treatments at Duke University Medical Center.  She never complained about her situation, rather she always returned with a smile and a pleasant story about her conversations with staff and other patients.  Mom always gained particular joy when she was able to speak to someone who appeared to be afraid, who was alone or who just needed to talk.  Those were the moments when she was at her best.

She made the Pennsylvania Department of Health a better place.  She made our home a better place and Duke University Cancer Center is a better place because she was there.  Whether someone has spent a few minutes, several hours or a whole day with Mom, that person ALWAYS walked away thinking what a wonderful, classy person she was.  We, as a family, are the most fortunate people in the world because we spent a lifetime with her.  She is our perfect mother.

Mom loved to make hand-made keep sakes for her grandchildren and specifically loved to sew hand-made teddy bears.

The Carol Gray Foundation was created as a way to honor our mother and to continue her special gift and passionate caring for others. The foundation will raise money and will utilize all donations to provide a hand-made teddy bear to children who have been diagnosed and being treated for Cancer and Brain Tumors.

We understand the fear, uncertainty, and struggle’s that fighting cancer can bring, and hope that Carol Bear’s will provide these children with comfort, love and in a small way show them that our mother is also with them. She truly loves each and every child in a very special way.

Thank you from all of the Gray family for contributing to our mother’s foundation.

Thank you, Mom for being that Truly Great Person in all our lives.

We love you now and always,

Testimony: A letter from one of Carol’s Best Friends

Dear Jenny,

Thank you so much for sharing the lovely tribute you wrote for your mother.  She truly was a great lady!!  I have so many wonderful memories of the times we shared together. She was always so up beat, she never seemed to be down for a moment.  She impacted so many lives in Lycoming County when she worked for the Department of Health.  I don't know if you are aware how she attacked the problem of lice in school-age children and worked tirelessly to educate both parents and educational professionals to prevent this problem.  She was also one of the first nurses to volunteer to work in the HIV program.  She not only impacted those at risk for this disease, but also helped to educate both professionals and lay people about this disease.  She also provided compassionate care for children in the Cardiac Clinic as well as adults in TB clinic.  She was the charge nurse for both of these clinics during her tenure at the Department.  Both of these clinics were well-organized when she directed them.

Personally, she was a great office mate!!!  We had so much fun together during work hours and after hours.  We had such a dreary office and every morning we would pretend to open curtains upon a lovely view and put a smile on our faces to start the day.  We worked hard but we always had time for a laugh.  Larry and I spent many enjoyable after-work hours with your parents at the Wheel Inn, The Antlers, and at the Morris Snake Hunt.  It was a pleasure to visit them in North Carolina and every time they came north to Williamsport.

The world lost a wonderful, compassionate caring nurse when your mother passed and I lost a wonderful friend.  Your mother will be missed!!!

Love,

Linda

A message from Faz (mom’s “3rd Daughter” and friend)

Your mom was a beautiful person from the inside out & she was like an angel placed in my life at the time I came to know you & your family....God knew I needed a mother back then & your mom so easily filled that emptiness in my life & made me feel so welcome in your family.  I will never forget that & will always have her close in my heart.  The whole Gray family is close in my heart.

I love you too!
